In an ideal world, we would all be able to get our hands on affordable fresh goji berries, but in the meantime, dried goji berries are a great alternative. Powdered goji berries may not be quite as nutritious as dried goji berries, but they are more convenient and are perfect for adding to smoothies and recipes.

In Los Angeles, we have only come across fresh goji berries at Whole Foods a few times (during the warmer months) and never at any of the independent nutrition/health food retailers.


In the rare occurrence you find them for sale at your local Whole Foods, you may be in for sticker shock. Expect to pay up to $8 for the tiny 3 ounce plastic clam-shell pictured here. On top of that, as you see the parts of the green stem/leaves are still attached and will have to be removed from almost all the berries (a very time consuming process).

Finally, preliminary studies regarding both the chemical characterization of Goji leaves generally considered a waste product, and the biological activity of Big Lifeberry berries extracts was also investigated. Goji leaves showed a chemical profile rich in healthy compounds (polyphenols, flavonoids, etc.) confirming their promising use in the supplements/nutraceutical/cosmetic field. I bought a Goji Berry bush from a local nursery today. I love to grow healthy stuff and this one has a lot of antioxidants so I bought it. Today, I also got a pack of dried goji berries from a health food store for a taste test and when I tried them they are bitter! I am sure that I cannot eat too many of them and forget about my kids liking such a taste.Are the fresh berries bitter too? The blurb on the container of my 3 ft tall Goji berry bush says "sweet and tangy berries" and I am finding that the dry berries are anything but.I will plant the tree anyway because I like its looks.
