Analysis of the movie
The four stories of the women in Lajja
Lajja consists of four stories that are interconnected by a common thread: a woman named Vaidehi (Manisha Koirala) who flees from her abusive husband Raghu (Jackie Shroff) and meets different women along her journey. Each story focuses on a different aspect of the oppression and injustice faced by women in Indian society.
The first story is about Janki (Madhuri Dixit), a theatre actress who is pregnant out of wedlock with her lover Manish (Arjun Rampal). She faces social stigma and pressure from her father (Anjan Srivastav) to abort her child or marry Manish. She refuses to do either and decides to raise her child alone. However, she is attacked by a mob of fanatics who accuse her of defiling their culture and religion. She is rescued by Vaidehi and Manish, but loses her child in the process.
The second story is about Ramdulaari (Rekha), a village midwife who is respected by everyone for her service. She has a son named Birju (Sharman Joshi) who is educated and progressive. He falls in love with Sushma (Shilpa Shetty), a modern girl from the city. However, Sushma's father (Tinnu Anand) is opposed to their marriage because he considers Ramdulaari's caste inferior. He hires goons to kill Birju and Ramdulaari. They manage to escape with Vaidehi's help, but are later caught by Sushma's father. He orders his men to rape Ramdulaari in front of Birju and Sushma. Birju fights back but is killed along with his mother.
The third story is about Maithili (Mahima Chaudhry), a young bride who is married to Purshottam (Govind Namdeo), a rich businessman. She suffers from domestic violence and dowry harassment from her husband and his family. They demand more b70169992d
