A classic menswear inspired style, this top has the feel of relaxed pajamas in a work-appropriate format. Tuck it into a pencil skirt or untucked over distressed jeans or barely buttoned with a ballgown skirt. This blouse can go anywhere.
Tip #5 (Casual): Roll up the waistband on your skirt (only works with some fabrics) to make the item a little shorter for certain outfits. Cover up the rolled waistband with your top.

With suited separates becoming more popular than suits in corporate environments, a black pencil skirt can be a very helpful piece to have in your wardrobe. In the outfit above, I styled a Boden blazer with a L.K. Bennett tank underneath. I finished the look with a teal work tote from Dagne Dover, delicate station necklace from Nadri and printed pumps from Sam Edelman.
Next up, this sleeker way to wear a black pencil skirt. Personally, I love the way beige and tan accessories look with an all black look, but you can certainly swap out the accessories I chose in this outfit for black ones. I styled the black pencil skirt with a slim Topshop turtleneck sweater and finished the look with tan heeled sandals from Vince Camuto, beige bag from Coach and drop earrings from Stella & Dot.
I threw in a pop of soft blue to this rich black pencil skirt work look. I layered the very popular Nic + Zoe 4-way cardigan over a cowl top from MM. Lafleur in the Birch shade. Finishing the outfit, I used these blue low heel block heel pumps from Sole Society (that one of my clients call the most comfortable shoes shoe owns), a burgundy handbag from Vince Camuto and blush drop earrings from Kendra Scott.
Black pencil skirts in classic wool fabrics are typically best for work. With a little finagling they can sometimes be worn for non-work events. I styled this black pencil skirt more casually using an off the shoulder top from Banana Republic, kitten heel sandals in grey from Nine West, clutch from Botkier and long pendant in silver.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's return to New York City is already marked by a stylish appearance. First, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at the United Nations headquarters in coordinated looks that exuded timeless elegance. Markle wore a black Givenchy top and pencil skirt that gave the illusion of a knee-length dress. The crewneck knit top featured a round neckline and medium-length sleeves, while the high-waist skirt stood out with two front patch pockets.
She paired it with matching Manolo Blahnik BB Pumps ($725) in black suede, giving the look a business flair. While she kept her jewelry minimal, she accessorized with a large Mulberry Zipped Bayswater Leather Bag ($1,495) in oxblood, her go-to yellow-gold Cartier Love Bracelet, and a gold Cartier Tank Française Watch. Her neat ponytail and natural makeup elevated the ensemble further.
Hi Cyndi, I loved all of your wardrobe suggestions and have gotten almost everything on the list but the skirt. I am having an awful time finding a pencil skirt that fits me properly. I have literally tried on every black pencil skirt in JC Penney, Kohls and a couple of other stores. I am finding that if they fit at the hips then they are too big at my waist. Anyone else have this problem and do you have any suggestions? Thanks and have a blessed day ?
Loved the Fall Basic Wardrobe series! And now this of how to put it all together!I wore my black pencil skirt and white blouse to church yesterday with low black boots, a hot pink scarf, and black sweater.I will style them with the denim jacket (that I just bought after this series) soon.
I have never worked in an office setting before. Ice cream server, historical tour guide, waitress, and wine sales associate, yes. Something where I needed a pencil skirt? Not really. But it wasn't so much that I never had the right setting for the skirt as that I didn't have a pencil skirt that fit me, (if you are just joining us, I am as pear-shaped as pear-shaped comes!) and if I am not comfortable, I will not wear something. And I don't mean pajama comfortable, but style/fit comfortable. I bet you knew that though. :)
For years I would dismiss pencil skirts. Even when I first opened the shop I pined after fabric that would have made the perfect skirt and just decided that it was never meant to be. Then, one of my friends/staff introduced me to this pattern. It is from Delia Creates and is called the Pleated Pencil Skirt. She swore up and down that it would fit me, and I finally caved. We ordered a few barkcloths from Gertrude Made, (they are here in the shop!) and I knew that if this was such a magical pattern, I might be able to actually use that gorgeous fabric! The thought was enough to push me over the edge.
So I had to figure out which fabric was going to be my wearable muslin, which was really fun. I thought that the Cotton + Steel Checkers would make a pretty cute skirt. I think I was right. That was the easy part.
Actually, it wasn't difficult to sew at all. The one thing I would change on my third attempt (yes, I have made two so far!) is the pleat. Right now it is all one piece for the back and the pleat is just a fold all the way down the fabric. I traced a size four for the waist and graded out to a 6 at the hips. I also took just a small wedge out of where the skirt and waistband meet to do an on-the-fly sway back adjustment. That was it. The rest was straight from the pattern. And guys, it fit. IT FIT! Like it actually fit my hips and butt! It was astonishing. After wearing it around all day, I was a convert. Actually, as I type out this post I am currently wearing this EXACT outfit! So, it wasn't just a one-time skirt which, sadly, sometimes happens. This is for real. 041b061a72
