Plot summary
Lena Kaligaris, Tibby Rollins, Carmen Lowell and Bridget Vreeland are four teenage girls who have been best friends since childhood. They live in Bethesda, Maryland and are about to spend their first summer apart. Lena is visiting her grandparents in Santorini, Greece; Bridget is going to soccer camp in Baja California, Mexico; Carmen is visiting her father in South Carolina; and Tibby is staying home and working at a discount store.
Before they part ways, they go shopping together and find a pair of jeans that miraculously fits each of them perfectly. They decide to share the jeans equally over the summer as a way of staying connected. They also make a list of rules for wearing the pants, such as never washing them, never letting a boy take them off, and always writing a letter to the next person who gets them.
In Greece, Lena meets Kostas Dounas, a local boy who saves her from drowning. She later learns from her grandmother that their families are enemies due to an old feud. Kostas pursues Lena, saying that their history has nothing to do with them. Lena initially rejects him, but eventually falls in love with him. However, when Kostas confesses his feelings to her, her family interrupts and drags her away. Lena asks her grandfather for permission to see Kostas before he leaves for Athens. He agrees and helps her reunite with him.
In Mexico, Bridget is attracted to Eric Richman, one of the coaches at her soccer camp. She flirts with him and tries to seduce him, despite his reluctance due to their age difference and his professional ethics. She succeeds in sleeping with him, but feels empty afterwards. She realizes that she was using sex as a way of coping with her mother's death and her father's emotional distance. She writes a letter to Eric apologizing for her behavior and leaves the camp early.
In South Carolina, Carmen is shocked to discover that her father is engaged to Lydia Rodman, a white woman with two children from a previous marriage. She feels betrayed and unwanted by her father, who has been absent from her life for years. She also feels out of place among Lydia's family and friends, who are all blond and thin. She tries to sabotage the wedding by making a scene at the rehearsal dinner and destroying the bride's wedding dress. She runs away from the house and calls Tibby for help.
In Maryland, Tibby is making a documentary about the people she encounters at her job. She meets Bailey Graffman, a 12-year-old girl who faints at the store. Bailey delivers the pants to Tibby's house when they are accidentally sent to her address by mistake. Bailey becomes interested in Tibby's film and appoints herself as her assistant. Tibby is annoyed by Bailey's presence at first, but gradually grows fond of her. She learns that Bailey has leukemia and is dying. Tibby decides to make a film about Bailey's life instead of her original project.
The four friends reunite at the end of the summer at Tibby's house. They share their experiences and support each other through their problems. They also watch Tibby's film about Bailey, who has passed away. They realize that the pants have brought them closer together and helped them grow as individuals. They decide to keep the pants as a symbol of their friendship and vow to stay in touch.

Reception and awards
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants received mostly positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 77% based on 131 reviews, with an average rating of 6.7/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "This adaptation of a beloved novel charms with its heartwarming tale of friendship and young adulthood; realistic portrayals of the lives of teenage girls lend the comedy-drama sincerity, and may capture hearts outside the female-centric demographic." On Metacritic, the film has a score of 66 out of 100 based on 34 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".
The film was praised for its performances, especially by the four lead actresses, who were relatively unknown at the time. Roger Ebert gave the film three out of four stars and wrote, "The movie is based on a novel by Ann Brashares, unread by me, but it doesn't feel like a retread of a book. It feels like it was written from scratch for the screen, because it doesn't have that sense of following a master plan." Claudia Puig of USA Today called it "a cut above most teen movies" and said, "The four actresses have an easy rapport with one another and are believable as best friends." Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote, "The four young actresses are charmers who never push too hard for cuteness or pathos. They make this Sisterhood a good fit."
The film was nominated for several awards, including two ALMA Awards for Ferrera (Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Performance of a Song for a Feature Film), two Teen Choice Awards for Choice Movie: Comedy and Choice Movie Breakout Performance - Female for Lively, and one Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Feature Film - Supporting Young Actress for Boyd. The film won one award: the Women Film Critics Circle Award for Best Family Film.
